This is one of two pieces I created for The Colour Between group show curated by Llewellyn Skye.
"The sea has always been a place of sanctuary and joy for me so it follows that my abstract paintings explore themes of nurture and wellbeing through the lens of the sea.
Beginning with joyful memories of trips to the beach and the sense of freedom it affords, I apply paint energetically and in broad strokes in a dynamic to- and fro, before layering continents of transparent colour.
Eroding the surface, I ‘let the light shine in’, scraping areas which appear as sunlit reflections beaming into the shallows, or light refracted off submerged rocks or sand. Low values are uplifted by the high; energetic early stages are counteracted by subtle layers.
My aim for this tension between release and consideration is to create works with magnetism and emotive power.
The effect is that the viewer feels both witness to- and a part of, the healing rhythm of the water. Nurtured, held, and alive with the very nature of it."
