Catching Some Rays
We had been snorkelling in a group and someone worried they may have seen the fin of a shark. Fortunately it turned out to be a small stingray zipping in and out of view between the rocks and the rays of the sun under the water.
The sea has always been a place of sanctuary and joy for me so it follows that my abstract paintings explore themes of nurture and wellbeing through the lens of the sea.
Beginning with joyful memories of trips to the beach and the sense of freedom it affords, I apply paint energetically and in broad strokes in a dynamic to- and fro, before layering continents of transparent colour.
Eroding the surface, I scrape areas which appear as sunlit reflections beaming into the shallows, or light refracting off sand and submerged rocks.
My aim is to create works with magnetism and emotive power so the viewer feels both witness to- and a part of, the rhythm of the water. Nurtured, held, and alive with the very nature of it.
