This expressive, energetic painting was made after an early morning hike in local bushland near my studio at Mt Coot-tha. I like to stop and absorb the energy of the area I am in - the wind, the movement of animals and insects darting about. There's a bustling sort of energy there, even on quiet mornings. 
I chose to use a palette of deep reds, violets and pinks and expressively laid the paint down in thin washes and thick scrapes, making energetic marks with brushes and other mark making tools. I used graphite and coloured wax to move the eye around the canvas with marks, and oils for thicker strokes and texture. 
I titled this painting Sweet Retreat after the way it feels to be in nature.
